Carb backfiring and running a little Hot

My 370 Ford engine is backfiring threw the carb. It has electronic ignition. I’ve timed it, tried another coil, vacuum advanance checked out good. I don’t know what to do. The engine has about 1800 miles on the rebuild. Carb has been rebuilt. Plugs all look black and oily. I guess the rings haven’t set yet. Anyone have any ideas?
Also at times it seems to run a tad bit hot. It over heated to the point of blowing the head gasket climbing a hill. Seems to cool down at slower speeds or at ideal. Radiator has been rodded. I checked the thermostats (it has two) and they looked to be opened all the way. Fun clutch looks OK, not oily. If you put the temperature gauge on a 8th inch scale. Normal is from 1/4 to 7/8. I feel OK if it don’t get over 5/8 but start worry if it gets over that. When it blew the gasket it was running at 7/8 till climbing the hill. After the new gaskets it was running 3/4 for about 200 miles then dropped down to 5/8. Then on the return trip (trips are about 400 miles one way) it got to 13/16 for about 50 miles then went back to 5/8 and stayed there most of the trip back.
Any ideas on this one?

Carl
