I am most concerned about rust in old rigs and least concerned about the engine condition although it is nice when the vehicle is complete. A rig that can be driven home is worth a lot more than one you have to drag half a mile with a crawler before you winch it up on your trailer. Paint is probably something you will have to do on almost anything that old, but it is a lot easier to prepare a straight, unrusted body than one that is all beat up. Local markets vary a lot. The Chevys of the late 40's through the 50's are very popular and easy to get parts for. They were good pickups and there are lots of them still on the road. The half tons are probably a little more valuable than the 3/4 tons. I have not seen any of those Chevys in my area that could be had for less than $500 to $1000 and good units that only really needed paint and tires were several times that. But watch for rust in the lower cab back. Good luck.
