74 International 200 Fuel Pressure Regulator

Hi,
We have a 1974 International 200 pickup with a 304 V8 engine in it. The engine had always seemed "cold blooded" so I thought I'd check some stuff out on the truck. It has a "pressure regulator" in the fuel line, I removed it to clean it and it leaked when I put it on the truck because the gasket was bad. Since we needed to use the truck, I just put a rubber fuel line where the pressure regulator was, the truck starts and runs better and has a lot more power than it did before when the pressure regulator was on it. My question is what is a "pressure regulator"? What does it do? Is it to save more fuel or something?? Any info on it would be appreciated. the regulator says "MILESMASTER" on it.

Thanks,
Andy.
