Re: 1951 Chevy truck cab swap to 1982 chassisPosted by Jim Morrison on November 22, 2006 at 15:46:21 from (68.9.240.73): In Reply to: 1951 Chevy truck cab swap to 1982 chassis posted by Andy on November 18, 2006 at 15:35:12:
Andy, The dropped foot boxes on the 84 will give you a problem. L brackets were fabricated for the front mounts and the rear I used existing mounts. The cab should bridge the frame drop. Remember to bolt up a front fender to the cab and adjust the cab frame postion to center the front wheel in the fender wheel opening. I used an after market cargo box and set it on hockey pucks then drilled holes and attached the box to the frame using the hockey puck as a spacer and shock absorber. You may have to relocate the radiator mounts (I did) as when the cab moves forward (to center the wheels) so does the radiator. Also because the cab moved forward on the frame the cargo box also came forward. I had to shorten the frame at the last cross member (just in front of the rear spring shackel). I didn't like the 3 inch gap but I could live with it. I fabracated a spacer frame cover painted it black and put it between the cab and frame. There is a picture of it on this site. search under "International". One more thing, when the cab went forward so did the engine to make room for the cab. I used the existing engine mounts, however I bolted 1/4" thick plates to the frame mounts then moved the engine forward 2 inches on the plates, drilled holes in the plates and mounted the engine to the plates. I don't remember the size of the 1/4" plates but make the big enough to cover the mounts and have enough room for adjustment. Because the engine went forward the drive shaft has to be extended two inches also. It can be done. Good luck. Jim
