What is this stuff in the differential? (1962 GMC)Posted by cheg on March 10, 2006 at 13:48:55 from (67.72.98.45):
I have a 1962 GMC 4000. The truck was once a firetruck and has 8,000 original miles. I opened the differential cover to change the gear lube and found this thick paste "Stuff" that had set up in the bottom of the differential case. It was about 3/4 inch thick. I was able to get under it with a screwdriver and pull up chunks off the bottom. Do you suppose it is 44 year old gear lube that has set up and formed a paste? I have never seen anything like it. There was gear lube on top of this. Gas cut it off the diff. cover so I assume it is oil based. I know there is no way I can clean it all out.
