1987 Ford RangerPosted by Buzz on December 01, 2005 at 19:14:15 from (65.143.127.191):
Got a 1987 Ford Ranger here with a real bad oil leak. Coming from the drivers side, rear of engine, just above where the tranny bell housing bolts to the engine. At first I thought there was an oil plug leaking in behind there. Pulled the tranny and plugs are tight. Main seal looks good also. Valve cover gasket looks good. Oil pressure sending unit looked good. I suspect that it is coming from the head gasket, but am not really sure if that's even possible. I'm thinking you could lose a quart in thirty minutes roughly, so you can see it's a pretty good leak. Before pulling the tranny, I got in behind there with a mirror and all I could see was oil coming from that upper left corner of the bell housing. That, by the way is directly below the head gasket, which is why I'm wondering about the head gasket. Was this a common problem with these 2.3 four cylinders? Thanks for any help. Buzz
