Are Old trucks worth it? What would you do?

I've been scanning the classifieds looking for a cheap pickup to use around the farm when I saw an ad for a nice 1941 chevy stake truck (9ft). We had a '42 when I was young and this is awfully tempting. I know the thing looks cool but I am wondering how it will be to actually use such a truck for real work. (firewood, hay, mulch and a backup for when the car is in the shop) Does anyone out there actually USE their old truck? How would this thing do at highway speeds? Are there any upgrades I would want to do to modernize it for daily use (safety for example - truck is pretty much stock). What is the biggest drawback to an old truck?
I have a barn full of antique tractors that I use so I do know about bloody knuckles and greasy fingernails but I would rather drive than constantly restore this thing. I dont mind maintaining a vehicle but I would like it to run most of the time.
Or will I be a lot happier with a high mileage mid 80's pickup and just leave the antiques to the car shows? Given my price range I am probably looking at a truck that needs some TLC no matter what age it is.
Any thoughts would welcome

Thanks
