79 chevy pu driveline

I have a '79 chevy pu 4wd. Recently I was having trouble with the u-joints in the front drive line. The truck is used for my business, so I was going to drive it in 2wd w/out the front line while I replaced the ujoints. However, it wouldn't go anywhere until I put it in 4wd. Anyone know if they ever made a 'front wheel drive'? Or is the transfer case probably just shot?
