Got a 1984 chevy 4x4, needed a new thermostat, easy fix right?--wrong-

the nuts that hold the thermostat cover were old, bad and rusty, used oil and got the first one off. The second one was terribly tight and i twisted it off. Ok now the thermo should come off right--wrong again-- with nothing holding it but the gasket I beat and beat with a hammer and it would'nt lift off. aS FAR AS i CAN SEE THERE IS NOTHING HOLDING IT.

Put the one nut back on and it doesnt leak, but I want to fix it right before winter.

2 questions: what do I use to get the sheared bolt out and why wont the cover come off. are these studs that are mounted from the factory- how do i replace these- thanks for your help in advance
